Chapter 6

Steve watched as one of the larger men got into the driver’s seat, and now just one man was next to Beth. He had a bag in one hand and reached for the door with his other hand, which was when Steve saw the opportunity to take him down and pull Beth away. He grabbed his gun and ran towards the second man, saying, “Hey, you!” and cracked the guy across the face with the butt of his gun.

Steve grabbed hold of Beth. The man didn’t fall over and instead reached for his gun, but Steve already had his pointed at his head. “Not another move, or I shoot!” Steve yelled. “Beth, go get in my car.” Beth stared at him, shocked at the turn of events, and Steve yelled, “Now, Beth!”

Beth took off for his car and jumped in while Steve walked slowly backward from the man and told the other guy not to move, or he would shoot. Keeping his gun pointed at the man, he opened his car door and got in. He quickly turned the key and peeled out, telling Beth to duck in case they decided to shoot. He saw the guy in his rearview mirror reach for his gun but couldn’t get a clear shot and kicked the car’s tire in frustration.

Beth was staring straight ahead, shivering. Steve clicked on the heat and texted Ken that Beth was safe.

What did those guys want with her? Ken wanted to know. I’m at the police station right now filing a report.

Beth was breathing heavily and looked like she might be having a panic attack but trying to hide it.

Steve said, “Hey, listen…you’re safe now. It’s going to be okay.”

Beth turned around to make sure they were not being followed and then said to him angrily, “I was making a deal with them to get my brother’s money back.”

“Is that why they were holding you at gunpoint?”

“They followed me home from the bar and planned on making me disappear and pinning the whole money disappearing thing on me. But I told them I would help them if they gave my brother’s money back.”

“So let me get this straight…you were going to work for these guys and throw your career in law away just to help your brother?”

“I was going to figure out how to get away,” Beth insisted. “Now, we are never going to see his money again.”

Steve cleared his throat as they pulled up to the mansion. “While you were in the warehouse, your brother caught his fiancée trying to steal more money. She’s disappeared and was working with those guys. The wedding is off. Your brother is at the police station filing a report right now.”

Beth exited the car and slammed the door. She looked at him and said, “The police can’t find money that’s offshore. Those guys were our last chance.” She turned to go inside, and Steve followed, baffled that after basically saving her, she was still angry with him as usual.
